Why did we choose a 240g/m² embroidered T-shirt?

A perfect balance between style, comfort, durability... and high standards

At Maison Plumarius , every detail counts.
From the embroidered design to the choice of fabric, nothing is left to chance. And if we chose a weight of 240g/m² for all our embroidered T-shirts, it is not by chance, but because it is the best compromise between solidity, breathability, style and longevity .

🧵 What is the weight of a T-shirt?

The weight (expressed in g/m² , grams per square meter) indicates the thickness and density of the fabric . The higher the number, the heavier, thicker, and more durable the fabric.
But more is not always better: you have to find the right balance between resistance, drape, comfort and breathability .

📉 What you find on the market: 97% of T-shirts are too thin

Our research – across industry, suppliers and customers – has shown that around 97% of T-shirts sold commercially are between 120g/m² and 180g/m² .

Why? Because these T-shirts are cheaper to produce : less cotton, less material, easier to fold, ship, and stack.
But they have many disadvantages:

  • They quickly lose their shape when washed.
  • They wrinkle easily
  • They relax at the collar, shoulders and seam
  • They tear faster with embroidery or wear
  • They lack hold : the drape is soft, shapeless, unflattering

👉 In summary: more economical for the brands, but not for you , who have to buy them more often.

💨 And above 240g/m²? Too heavy, too hot

At the other extreme, some very heavy T-shirts can reach 270g/m² or more .
While they are more durable, they are also much less breathable and can quickly become uncomfortable to wear , especially in summer:

  • The fabric lacks flexibility
  • It traps heat
  • It gives a feeling of thickness which weighs down the silhouette
  • It is more rigid , which limits the fluidity of movement

✔️ Why 240g/m² is the best option

After years of experience in luxury houses , and in discussions with our suppliers and our own embroiderer artisans , we have come to the same conclusion:

👉 240g/m² is the ideal weight for a high-end embroidered T-shirt.

Here's why:

✅ Better fit and structure

The fabric doesn't cling to the body, maintaining a beautiful line and a clean drape. It offers an elegant silhouette, without transparency or "cheap" effect.

✅ Resistance to washing

It doesn't shrink, stretch , or twist in the wash. A collar that stays straight, sleeves that stay neat... even after hundreds of washes.

✅ Perfect for embroidery

A thin fabric will tear due to the tension of the threads. A fabric that is too thick will make the embroidery stiff.
At 240g/m², we obtain the perfect density to firmly fix the embroidery , without deforming or weighing it down.

✅ Comfort and breathability

Despite its thickness, the cotton we use remains naturally breathable . It lets air through, regulates humidity, and remains comfortable to wear even in summer .
